Needs of Tanboo Goth

[This is just an archive from the past, there are no current needs for this]

At the moment there are several organisations and individuals who are helping us in looking after the population of Tanboo Goth in various ways. Here we are highlighting special case needs, or general needs that we haven’t been able to meet yet.

If you would like to help with any of those, please get in touch.

Flood Situation Update – 07/10/2022

Mehar and Khairpur Nathan Shah on 07/10/2022, from Landsat 8-9

Some roads have started to surface, but many are still completely flooded. Land surrounding cities is still heavily flooded. Despite that a small number of people have started to return home from Tanboo Goth, mainly to secure their properties against theft. Those who have cattle are also desperate to leave the hilly and barren area because their cattle have been losing weight rapidly due to extreme shortage of food and water. Food situation isn’t going to be a lot better in the flooded areas, but at least they will have good access to water.

Majority remains camped in Tanboo Goth.

Mosquito Nets

Mosquitoes breed on standing water and this is mosquito season in Sindh. Tanboo Goth residents need mosquito nets to help reduce spread of malaria.

Those who have stayed behind on whatever piece of land, flood barriers or transport networks are above water are at much greater risk from mosquitoes. Those people tell us that they need mosquito nets more than food because their kids are getting bitten badly at night from mosquitoes and get malaria.

If you can help with mosquito nets, please get in touch. We can distribute them within Tanboo Goth, and can reach the flooded areas as well. A mosquito net prices start at Rs 800 and can cost almost double due to shortage in market or bigger sizes and better qualities. Rs 800 is equivalent to US $3.6.

Antidotes/Antivenom

Majority of people have no choice but to sleep on ground. At night many insects come out, and snakes and scorpions are common too. It is not only difficult to find timely treatment in the vicinity but many of these life saving medicines need to be refrigerated storage. Currently we don’t have a refrigerator in Tanboo Goth, if you would like to donate one, then we can try to get some antidotes/antivenom. If you have expertise in this field, please do get in touch.

Blankets

It has started to be a bit cold at night in Tanboo Goth now and most people don’t have blankets or warm clothes. If you would like to buy them some blankets, especially for the kids and elderly, we can help distribute them.

Transport Home

We have a growing number of people registering for help with transport back home. We are in negotiations with the transporters for buses and trucks at reasonable prices. Unfortunately we also don’t have funds for this task, and we are looking for donors to help in this matter. It can be either provision of vehicles, or funds to pay the transporters.

Rehabilitation

Most of the villages have been completely wiped out, buildings turned to rubble – a situation worse than a war zone. We are trying to find ways to help these people build cheap houses from local materials, especially from compressed mud blocks and bamboo roofs.

If you have expertise in building environmentally friendly houses on the cheap, or can help fund the purchase of compressed block making machines, bamboos, and stones for foundations, please get in touch.

Special Cases

Wheelchair for a disabled lady

We have helped this lady with food rations and shelter. A wheelchair would help her while in Tanboo Goth, and afterwards when she returns to her home. If you would like to donate her a wheelchair, please get in touch.

Shelter

The tents we have distributed so far haven’t made a big dent in the number of people without shelter, and there are still many families that sleep without any shelter at night, and spend all day in the sun. There are many who rely on makeshift tents from bed sheets, quilts and sticks during the day and then spread them on the roadside to sleep on ground.

Many children sleep by roadside without any kind of shelter
Many people don’t even have enough quilts or bed sheets so they sleep on them during the night and hang them up with sticks for shade from the sun

If you would like to donate tents, beds, or mosquito nets for such families, please contact us.
