Distance Breakdown:
Metric: 42,195 metres.
Imperial: 26 miles and 385 yards.
Why this specific distance?
The “weird” number was standardised in 1921 based on the 1908 London Olympics.
Original Distance: The first modern Olympic marathons (starting in 1896) were approximately 40km (25 miles), inspired by the legend of Pheidippides’ run from the Battle of Marathon to Athens.
The Royal Change: For the London Games, the course was set at 26 miles from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium. To ensure the finish line was directly in front of the Royal Box for Queen Alexandra to see, an extra 385 yards were added to the track portion.
Standardisation: This accidental 26.2-mile distance became so famous due to the dramatic finish of that race that World Athletics (then IAAF) officially adopted it as the global standard in 1921.
If you are training for one, you might find it useful to:
Calculate a target pace for a sub-4 hour finish (roughly 9:09 per mile).
